BorgWarner

Human Resources Intern

February 2022 • Kokomo, IN

What I liked

I've had another internship before, but my HR internship with BorgWarner is so much better. What I appreciate about this company is that they treat their interns like they are employees. Instead of getting busy work, I got hands on experience with HR tasks across several different categories. There's a big emphasis on friendliness and teamwork in the company, too, so I always felt like I could reach out and ask questions without feeling burdensome.

What I wish was different

I have no real complaints. Any suggestions I've had I've been able to take to my managers and they addressed it straight up.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice about my experience is that you need to take your internship seriously. Like I said before, BW treats its interns like employees. You'll get lots of projects that require serious time management, organization skills, and attention to detail. Still, I think it's so much more worth it to have an internship where you get hands on experience instead of busy work. If you come to work willing to learn then you'll be fine :)

HR Intern

June 2020 - April 2021 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I had an incredible team and my manager did a really great job with getting me exposure in areas of HR that I was interested in. I was able to put my name on projects that I worked on and I personally felt that I was making an impact on the team and company.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, because of Covid by internship has been remote so I would have wished to be in person and experience the office setting but that is something beyond our control!

Advice

Be sure to come in with an open mind because you will be thrown a lot of new material and information from the get go. You won't be expected to know everything but you will be expected to show initiative to learn and develop yourself without being hand-held 24/7. It's a fast-paced company and you'll need to learn how to adapt and work independently since a lot of responsibility comes with the role. But overall, what you put in is what you'll get out! I really believe BW is a great company to work for both in learning experience and culture.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

January 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I loved being a part of an organization that is a pioneer in the department of my major. I loved the self-motivating atmosphere that is promoted within the organization.

What I wish was different

This internship was everything that I thought it would be and more. So I did not wish anything should have been different.

Advice

My advice to be pro-active and never be afraid to ask to be a part of a project that you are interested in. An internship is a learning experience and being a part of as many projects as you can is the best way to learn and explore different interests. It is very surprising how many interests one can come across that they did not know they had.

Manufactring Co-op

July - December 2018 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

I greatly enjoyed working in a professional engineering setting in a dedicated department. To be able to work directly with other co-ops and engineers made for a great workplace. I was also treated as an employee in the department and not simply an intern.

What I wish was different

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at the company. However, there were times where I was extremely frustrated with ongoing projects that were put on hold by other employees. There were also times where there was simply nothing for me to do, a little bit of a reminder that I was still an intern.

Advice

Learn to manage multiple projects at once as well as learn to work with union employees.

HR Intern

January 2017 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

BorgWarner is one of the greatest places to work - especially as an intern. I have been able to attain real world experience that has sent me up for great success going into an entry-level job out of college. You can tell this company values their interns through the time and resources invested in training and experience offered. This is also a great place to work because the environment is very healthy for workplace dynamics and relationships. Leadership top-down really strive to create a culture of collaboration and innovation that pushes all of the employees here towards greatness. I am truly hoping that I can stay with this company after I gradutae!

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing! I have learned so much and truly grown in and outside of the workplace. I was even able to transfer departments as I started realizing my future was heading a different direction. I am sure people have other experiences, but I was blessed with amazing bosses and coworkers and cannot complain at all!

Advice

I would encourage any student that has an internship to make the absolute most of the experience - especially with this company. I can honestly say that if I would not have challenged myself in asking the hard questions and making as many connections as possible, my experience would be very different. BorgWarner will give you challenging work and high-level tasks, but that is only if you are ready and willing to go for it. Try new things and make lasting connections with people - you never know who you might be working with/for down the road!
