What I liked

Working at Blakely Financial has been an amazing opportunity that has allowed me to get real-world experience in the financial planning field. Over the course of my internship, I had the opportunity to learn about all facets of how the firm operates while focusing on assisting the team with investment research and financial planning tasks. As I strengthened my investment research skills over my multi-semester internship, my responsibilities were significantly elevated to include tasks such as trading client accounts, making investment recommendations for model portfolios, implementing new portfolio strategies, and leading the firm's quarterly investment review meetings. From the skills I learned and strengthen over the course of my internship, I was able to obtain the APMA (Accredited Portfolio Management Advisor) professional designation to further advance my career in the finance industry.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice I would share with new interns in this role would be to take advantage of Blakely Financial's offer to pay for professional designations and financial licenses. As a firm that encourages personal and professional growth among its employees, Blakely Financial happily offers to pay for any study material and testing fees associated with any of the dozens of financial designations and licenses.

What I liked

I enjoy that you apply practical concepts from classes to do real work that can help make a difference for clients. Each day is unique and the work is fulfilling, truly adding to the student experience. This is an opportunity that pays dividends and gives you great insight into the financial planning industry at such a young age.

Advice

Take advantage of all opportunities to grow professionally and learn more about the industry. Not only can you apply your classroom experiences to the workplace, but as a student intern, you can apply your work experiences to the classroom.
