Billiken Teacher Corps

Volunteer

May - June 2018 • Belize City, Belize

What I liked

I took a semester long class to discuss global education and service in Belize. We went through the political structure and the economic structure of the country which was immensely helpful in understanding the poverty level. The actual experience itself I loved. We worked at St. Martin de Porres in the classrooms helping to work with students who were behind and reorganizing the school library.

What I wish was different

I wish it was a longer program, but the way it’s structured now makes sense because it’s affordable for students.

Advice

I would absolutely recommend this volunteering experience, and if you want to learn more look up the SLU Belize 2020 project!

McNair Research Intern

June - July 2018 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I liked the freedom to design my own experiment while choosing a mentor that would best suit my needs to develop and harness the skills I will need to be proficient in graduate level research. The McNair mission is imparitive in progressing the state of our scientific community and my personal goals align with this endeavor. Being a part of a movement to intergrate minds from many backgrounds, specifically adverse backgrounds, into the higher education community allowed me to integrate my purpose with my educational training.

What I wish was different

I dont have many cons for this experience except that I wish we had more time to develop our research methodology and questions. I also wish we could of presented our research to the university so we could of created an outreach program to impact the community with our findings.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to enjoy every second of it because it goes by fast with the amount of flexibility granted with this project.

Conference Assistant

May - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I liked that the schedule was very flexible and the free summer housing. I had a lot of free time after work, at least when I wasn't on call for one of the conferences.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been gloves and other sanitation procedures, as we were messing with dirty/used laundry with our bare hands on a daily basis.

Advice

Make sure that you put your shifts into your calendar before hand, so that your co-workers don't have to pick up the slack, espeically when it ocmes to being on-call.
