What I liked

The job was fun and getting to know the store layout and helping customers was nice. I loved stocking and putting out items.

What I wish was different

The training was unpaid and was a lot for one day. I was thrown on the register without completing full training on it. So I wish training was more thorough.

Advice

Be prepared to do every task, stocker, cashier, and sales rep.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company of my coworkers. They were all super helpful and friendly. They also were very welcoming when I started training. Overall, great experience to have them by my side.

What I wish was different

There were some days where I wished customers could see things from my point of view and understand better. Customers got very difficult sometimes.

Advice

If you don't know how to handle a situation with a customer, pass the buck to your manager, they always know how to ease the situation.

Cashier

June - August 2018 • Beaumont, TX

What I liked

What I liked about the job was meeting new people everyday. Customer service was the motive for all of us and being able to meet people and help them with their needs was the best.

What I wish was different

There isn’t much to change, the company is a well designed business. The only thing that could have been changed was more staff. At times we were low on help, especially while closing. Having more people is what I would could be different.

Advice

Bed Bath and Beyond is definitely a good place to work, the experience of learning customer service was key. It doesn’t only help within the bsuniess, but throughout daily activities. The advice I would give is just be able to take the time to learn how to truly use customer service and embrace it.

Sales Associate

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked interacting with customers and helping them with everyday needs

What I wish was different

That we could sit down once in a while

Advice

Just be yourself. As for confiddence, fake it till you make it. But don't seem so confident that you look cocky. Because that makes you look stupid. And always remember that it does not hurt to ask questions. Its better to do the right thing after asking a question, then do the wrong work because you were too stubborn or anxious to ask your senior co-workers around you

Sales Associate

May - August 2019 • Larkspur, CA

What I liked

As someone who has never worked in retail before I got a glimpse of the other side of a business. I found a great appreciation for people in the stores who are really helping a company flourish. As a marketing major a got a real understanding of consumer behavior and peoples purchasing decisions.

What I wish was different

I wish to have experienced different departments of the store. I also wish I could have a better understanding of the day to day role the store manger has on the floor and in the office.

Advice

Pay attention to everything. Details on why products are in certain places of the store, strategies behind selling the items that are in the weekly ads, consumers buying behavior, customer and employee interaction. I took everything as a learning experience. I found that there is a particular reason a retail store does business the way they do.

Sales associate

June 2017 • Riverhead, NY

What I liked

My coworkers, including other associates and managers are extremely kind and supportive. We work in a well rounded team environment that keeps each other driven, even when days are busy.

What I wish was different

Customers can be extremely rude and impatient, even when you are doing all you can for them. I wish they were kinder and more understanding.

Advice

Even when things are slow, find projects to do around the store. The more effort you show, the more your manager will notice and this an lead to either pay raises, an easier time taking days off, or even getting promoted to a higher position.

Sales Supervisor

April 2018 • Doral, FL

What I liked

I enjoy being supervisor at the front end because it has taught me time management skills, how to work quickly, how to resolve issues, and how to engage with people in a friendly way.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay was different. In a store, we are providing a service and many people take advantage of that.

Advice

I think there is a lesson in everything. You may not want to work in retail for the rest of your life, but learn all that you can from it because many things can actually be applied to other fields of study.
