This position gave great experience working for a government organization, and also interacting with new people everyday to resolve IT issues within the district. It also gave me experience being in constant communication with my team, which worked excellent this summer, to resolve issues.
What I wish was different
I wish the program had more interns, so that I had more support in my role. I was only one of two interns.
Advice
This position was no where near where I wanted to be, but I am grateful for the experience because it gave me work experience in something other than my main interest and also in a corporate setting.

K-12 Administration Intern
May - August 2020 • Baltimore, MD
What I liked
This summer I served as a K-8 school administrator intern at Henderson-Hopkins. My core responsibility was to aid the school administration, leadership, and school reopening workgroup in developing a school reopening and academic recovery plan for the 2020-21 school year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. I split my time researching and offering insight to global school reopening efforts and best practices between the reopening workgroup's 3 sub-committees: Teaching and Learning, Technology and Operations, and Health and Safety. The research amassed from global practice and help from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Medicine allowed me the opportunity to work on some other other projects within these sub-committees. For Teaching and Learning, I teamed up with school administrators and teachers to observe and evaluate various online learning platforms to decide which would be most helpful in academic recovery. For Technology and Operations, I used the current advice from the CDC and a blueprint of the school's campus to decide how many students could fit within each classroom with adequate distancing. And for Health and Safety, I introduced and shared Davidson's own weight room entrance and screening procedures with the school, which would then be applied to their recess and school entrance policy. Outside of my day-to-day assignments, I had the pleasure of observing and shadowing Mr. Merrill in his duties and meetings as an Assistant Principal in a variety of settings and contexts such as non-profit engagement, resource allocation, and professional development. These meetings gave me the opportunity to see what it is like to be a school administrator in a truly athletic setting and the skills, mannerisms, and deliberative skills that I will forever hold on to.
What I wish was different
I wish the experience could have been in-person! Otherwise it was the perfect opportunity to open my eyes to a staggering amount of pathways I could pursue after my graduation from Davidson College in 2022.
Advice
The constant ups and downs of attempting to reopen a school in a pandemic taught me just how important values are when navigating a crisis. During my end-of-summer presentation, I identified these values as Guidelines for Directing Schools Through a Global Pandemic: A Crash Course. They are as follow: Define your action items/ deliverables clearly; hit the ground running, do not hesitate; be resilient and adaptable; ground yourself in the facts and best practice, but do not be afraid to think outside the box; assume the best in others.

Student teacher
January - May 2019 • Baltimore, MD
What I liked
My mentors were very helpful and I learned a lot from them, I got a job through the principal later on in a BCPS school that I like.
What I wish was different
I wish I could see other classrooms as well at least for a day or two.
Advice
Do EDTPA on time, try to remember many things your mentor does, it really helped me out in my new job, try to ask your supervisor to circulate other classrooms at least once.
