Learning about the commercial construction sector as a general contractor doing a wide variety of tasks in a high passed environment wit ha very supportive work environment.

What I wish was different

My time restrictions sometimes made me feel less than fully contributing to the team.

Advice

AVB is sincerely the best working environment I have had the privilege to be in and would recommend anyone that has the chance to be a part of the team.

The responsibility, interpersonal relationships, and exposure to wide variety of industry topics, tasks, and connections.

What I wish was different

Unpredictable nature of the industry. COVID redirected life goals and made leaving the internship less than ideal.

Advice

Be willing to take extra responsibilities and make an effort to connect with the full time staff.

What I liked

I enjoyed creating hyper-personal, curated tours for guests and practicing networking and connection-making in a highly interpersonal setting. I am pleased to have learned about challenges associated with management, service, negations, mediation, and problem solving. I also love that I had the opportunity to play a part in guests' stories as they search for new housing.

What I wish was different

The interview process was long, but I do understand AVB's process is as much about placement of new employees as it is about selection. I would have loved to engage in larger-scale creative projects, but there wasn't enough time.

Advice

It took over 10 applications for me to get a summer internship! In the end, it was EXTREMELY worth it- financially, educationally, and professionally. Be persistent. Applying can be really time consuming, but an easy trick is to apply to similar job postings so that your cover letter and resume needs only minor tweaks. The hardest part is often finding the right opportunity.
