Hospital intern

June - July 2019 • Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia

What I liked

I loved getting the chance to shadow in on different surgeries. It was great being able to experience what being a doctor would look like in the future.

What I wish was different

I don’t think anything! I wish I could have stayed longer actually!

Advice

I think everyone should get out of their comfort zone and go shadow abroad. It’s a life changing experience!

Atlantis Medical Fellow

June - July 2019 • Vigo, Pontevedra Province

What I liked

My internship was an amazing experience. I was able to shadow new doctors from all kinds of fields every day. I saw live surgeries up close and was able to speak to doctors directly about procedures. I also learned a lot about the medical care services in Spain, which is very different from the U.S. I also have been given many job offers because of my cultural experience.

What I wish was different

I only wish that it was a longer internship. I had an amazing time and was sad to leave after only a month.

Advice

I would highly recommend learning the language before going on an overseas internship. Language barrier is a big issue when shadowing in another country.

Student Fellow

June 2017 • Madrid, Madrid

What I liked

This was a fellowship for premed students to shadow in European hospitals, so through this program I got to stand in on incredible surgeries and talk to doctors who were experts in the fields that I want to go into. I saw so many incredible things and learned so much, not to mention it was a summer in Spain which was pretty incredible. And because the program made such a huge impact on my life, I am now an Ambassador for the program and have a continued relationship with them

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been placed in a larger city for the first half of my internship, but it was nice to see two different sides of medicine in Spain; the larger city and the small town

Advice

Ask as many questions as you possibly can, whether that is before you start the fellowship or during the fellowship

Advice

You are there to shadow and gain that abroad experience so manage your time well but if you are interested in the internship there are other things you could do to express that interest.

It was very well organized and beneficial for my career. The interactions with patents and doctors was very helpful for my education. I got to be in operation rooms and observe multiple complex surgeries. It was over all a very memorable experience that I will take with me into my personal life and career.

What I wish was different

Nothing really I would wish would be different. I wish there was more scholarship opportunities for internships abroad offer.

Advice

To be open to new experiences and cultures and to embrace change.

Atlantis Fellowship

June - July 2019 • Matosinhos Municipality, Porto

What I liked

Everything! The experience was wonderful and insightful. I watched many surgeries and explored Portugal and it was so beautiful! The people are friendly and many know at least a little English.

What I wish was different

There was a strike going on that caused us to miss a day of surgeries, but that was a learning experience on its own. I would avoid tourist spots in the summer next time since they got so crowded.

Advice

Save money and research exchange rates for euros. Know a few phrases in Portuguese, especially "thank you", it goes a long way to receiving friendly help.

Shadowing Fellow

May - June 2019 • Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia

What I liked

Atlantis offers an incredible experience for pre-med students to shadow and assist doctors in all departments of their hospital. I loved that this experience was abroad while also actually relevant to what I want to do post-undergrad.

What I wish was different

Literally nothing. The hosts, the doctors, and all of the fellows I was with were lovely the whole time. I wish I could have stayed there longer!

Advice

With a program offered to college students all across the country, be ready to know no one but about to be best friends with everyone you meet there. If you are pre-med OR considering pre-med I highly recommend this program. It offers such an incredible and intimate program with medicine that really helps you determine if the medical field is the right fit for you AND also connects you to foreign physicians who would be excellent choices for letters of rec.

Atlantis Research Fellow

July - August 2019 • Genoa, Metropolitan City of Genoa

What I liked

Atlantis is an extremely professional company that has thought through each step of the program for its fellows down to the hour. The freedom they granted allowed me to travel all around Italy, while spending copious hours in the Instituto Gaslini Hospital, gave me an incredible sense of what Italian culture looks like from an American perspective. Additionally, the manner in which Atlantis treats its fellows(fancy dinners out paid for by the company, paid for excursions to Portofino to swim in crystal blue waters surrounded by millionaires and yachts) was a privilege few in their life get to experience. I was given my own apartment a block from the hospital, my apartment's balcony overlooked the Ligurian Sea and somedays I would bring my suit to the hospital, put it in my locker while grabbing my hospital coat, and at the end of the day I'd simply change, walk out the front entrance of the hospital, down the steps, and jump into the ocean. The doctors I shadowed all spoke very good English, I came to learn that this was because they often times were required to learn out of English textbooks or in American institutions. The younger the doctor, the better their English, and this was a result of the changing political tide of Italy, much in the same way Generation Z and Millenials in America are somewhat more likely to have grown up learning Spanish as a second language.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to stay and research as well as more experience in Italian socialist healthcare.

Advice

First off, get DuoLingo and an Italian-English Dictionary. There were fellows that spoke fluent French, Spanish, and English, but for some reason refused to download the free DuoLingo app to understand what doctors who spoke only Italian were saying. You could get through the entire experience without speaking a lick of Italian, but my barely conversational understanding of the language helped me to form incredible bonds with doctors in Italy, whom I still speak with today over facebook messenger, and comprehend the operations I was watching through the directions of the surgeon. In truth, Italians love Americans and because of my rudimentary ability to speak Italian, I could walk down my street towards the hospital and ocean from my apartment waving to shop-owners, fisherman, and residents who I had come to form very personal relationships with after conversing with them and showing a genuine effort to want to experience Italy as a local.
