Honors Research Fellow

What I liked

As a history major and someone that loves to learn, it was the best of both worlds. I was able to have the unique experience of assisting a professor in the History department with research for his upcoming book and immerse myself in a new historical area of study that I had not focused on before. I realized how much of a story gathering data can tell, and how important of a contribution it makes to an author's work.

What I wish was different

I wish that it could have lasted longer. I enjoyed the job, the new skills I gained, and the professor I worked with

Research assistant

June - August 2020 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I liked learning about the research experience, especially in the unique circumstances of COVID, while working with a P.I. to find workarounds for the research as we could not do it in person.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to collect data, rather than just research potential ways to do so.

Advice

Always be willing to ask questions, ask for more work if you would like it, and be on task often.

Research Fellow

June 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I loved getting some experience in research, especially with running participants and entering data. I really enjoy the research experience as a whole. I also got along really well with the Professor whose work I was collecting data for. Overall it was an awesome learning experience, and showed me that I would love to do research in my career.

What I wish was different

It is difficult to recruit older adult participants for research in the Worcester area, so I wish that I had been able to get more participants than I did over the course of the summer. This would have enabled a larger sample size for the research and might have shown some stronger results upon analysis.

Advice

I would advise anyone who is thinking about the research field to have a research internship, so that you are truly sure that you enjoy it.

What I liked

I really enjoy how different the design projects are to what I normally do. I work a lot with formatting documents and working in InDesign (creating letters, making advertisements for magazines, and thank-you cards to donors) and Photoshop (with removing backgrounds and changing color profiles from RGB to CMYK to prepare photos for print). I also get chances to work with illustrations and vector design (with my frisbee design for the Student Alumni Associated), but there's much more formatting work and updating elements that hadn't been updated in a few years. All of this will certainly help me in my job search when I graduate in May. The work environment is very relaxed. I'm able to choose my own hours and work from home when applicable. The work clothing is more aligned with casual attire, which is something I will be looking for in my job search. Overall, this experience has (and still is) aided in expanding my design skills and showing me what to look for in an ideal job in my job search.

What I wish was different

I don't have anything currently I would change.

Advice

My only advice would be to make sure you are doing outside research and getting projects in on time. Many of these projects needed to be completed quickly (which I didn't have a problem doing), but someone with a more lax work ethic may struggle with this. If you are not a fan of "rush jobs" and having strict timelines for projects, this may not be the job for you. Also, when applying for this job (or any job you are going for), make sure you attach your resume and, if applicable, your portfolio or examples of your work! This was something that only I did over all the other candidates, and I was offered an interview because of it. It's something very small, but something that might put you ahead of other candidates going for the same job.
