Communications Intern

May 2023 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

The University Relations and Talent Acquisition team do an amazing job of supporting the interns. They are sure to set up many networking opportunities, advice sessions, interview/resume workshopping, etc. This was all very helpful at the start of my internship. As I moved through the summer, I networked a lot with full-time associates as well as other interns as many of them were at different stages of their careers than I was. This gave me a feel of what working at Alcon is like, but also what it is to be a young professional working in a corporate environment. No matter what level of management, everyone was willing to meet with me just to connect and talk about our professional careers. I am very thankful for the support from the entire Corporate Communications team and the University Relations team for their continuous support throughout the summer. It can be hard to navigate a corporate environment for the first time, but they made it feel easy!

What I wish was different

Nothing, I had an amazing experience at Alcon this summer!

Advice

Be prepared to meet and network with high level associates. This internship is what you make of it. If you prefer to skate by, then come in everyday work on your projects and leave. If you want to make the most of the internship, set up one-on-one time with your manager, other managers in your department, full-time associates in and out of your department, and so on. Be sure to diversify who you meet with. I was very thankful to hear from all levels of the company to get a REAL feel for what it means to work at Alcon. If you feel like you aren't working on much, ask for more! This is the one of the best ways to learn during your internship... by diversifying the type of work you do. Do not be scared to leverage your own thoughts! A great thing about being an intern is that you bring a young and fresh perspective and may bring to the table ideas that the team has never thought of. Always speak up and share what your opinions. This will help prove that you are invested in the team and are able to think critically.
