Job Summary

The Minnesota Technical Assistance Program (MnTAP) is seeking a junior, senior or graduate-level student to lead a project focused on waste reduction and energy efficiency with Kandiyohi County Landfill. The intern will work with MnTAP and Kandiyohi County Landfill staff to optimize the landfill’s leachate treatment system. The student will investigate flow rate modifications and evaluate pump energy efficiency. Additionally, they will explore ways to improve boron removal and reverse osmosis (RO) system efficiency. The intern will quantify these opportunities and develop suggestions to reduce waste and conserve energy as well as outline plans for implementation.

JOB DUTIES:

As part of this project, you will be asked to complete the following tasks:

  1. Investigate system flow rate modifications and estimate the benefits in terms of reverse osmosis (RO) filter longevity.
  2. Improve boron removal in current system to reduce the need for repeated passes through the treatment chain’s RO system.
  3. Analyze pump curves to determine potential energy efficiency gains.
  4. Explore strategies to reduce the RO reject rate.
  5. Estimate waste and energy reduction potential from implementation of provided recommendations, then prioritize suggested changes using simple payback methods for financial justification.
  6. As appropriate, support implementation of approved process changes or outline plans for future implementation.
  7. Summarize findings in a detailed report, including any recommended procedure changes, vendor proposals, and economic analysis of changes.
  8. Present findings to the company and at a MnTAP-hosted public presentation event.

As an intern, you will work at the company and report back to MnTAP. The position is full time, 40 hours per week, for three months to start after the conclusion of spring semester or quarter. Pay is $19/hour, with a lump sum stipend of $1,500 upon completion of the project deliverables: a final report and presentations. Cumulatively, this equates to $22.00/hour when averaged over the project. Candidates must pass a background check.
