What I liked

Learning more about the banking industry and business in general.

What I wish was different

That I would have been more proactive in learning more about the financial industry.

Advice

Push yourself to do hard things. It’s the only way to grow. Do not let fear get in the way of ambition. Also, be patient. Put in the time to grow. It’s normal to start out in a smaller role.

Floating Teller

June - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I really liked the company. I liked the people I trained with and I liked the way training was realistic instead of all about lofty goals you know won’t be on your mind on the job. I also liked (a little more selfishly) that, as a floating teller you have fewer responsibilities than the tellers who worked in one branch.

What I wish was different

Despite the reduced responsibilities of a floating teller, I think I would have liked to work in one branch. It’s difficult to learn the processes when you work at different branches who do things differently. It’s not too fun feeling like the new person everywhere you go. I also am not a huge fan of customer service.

Advice

This job is more for outgoing people. I’m not really that way. Of course, an introvert can still do it, I just think it would be more enjoyable as a more outgoing person.

Community Devlopment and Affairs Intern

June - September 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

The team I worked with was so helpful and included me in everything they did. I was able to visit organizations with my supervisor and get involved from the beginning.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to get a solid job offer before my internship ended or that the bank had more available jobs for interns.

Advice

Jump into the work you are doing and offer to help with everything from the start.

Corporate Banking Intern

June - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved the people and the organization, and the Internship program was very well run. I had lots of opportunities to hear from and network with high-ranking bank officials, and to interview people from around the Bank.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take initiative to learn everything you can about the Bank and how people got to where they are. Ask lots of questions, try to soak up as much as you possibly can.

Teller

May 2017 - July 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

The flexibility and skills learned that can propel me in a business career.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked harder to become a supervisor to learn other skills.

Advice

Getting to know the clients was the most helpful thing. Money is such a taboo subject but having a personal connection allowed then to open up and for me to offer products so I could meet my goals.

Floating Teller

June - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

The money! Aside from that, I honestly really liked the company. I had thought I would be happy staying there for the rest of my career before I got an internship offer that I had wanted for a while. On a more selfish note, a floating teller gets the luxury of not being expected to know everything and we are barred from doing certain kinds of transactions that sounded really hard. It’s a plus.

What I wish was different

I just don’t love customer service, but that’s a part of the job. Another thing I didn’t love was being a floating teller. I think I’d have preferred working in one branch.

Advice

This job is more for outgoing people than for people like me. Of course, being an introvert is no excuse not to do something—I still did the job, but I’d rather work with the same people every day rather than meet new people everywhere I go.
