Zachry Construction Corporation

intern

May - August 2022 • Haslet, TX

What I liked

It gave me a view of what it's going to be like in the management side of construction compared to being out on the field as a manual laborer. Gave me an idea of potential jobs I might want to seek in the future or potential jobs I'd want to avoid as well.

What I wish was different

I would only say that I wish was different would be just being out on the field more than in the office. I haven't worked in an office setting before and to transition from manual laborer to an intern in the office most of the time was a big shift for me.

Advice

The one piece of advice that I would share about my experience is to be open and get to know everybody from the work crew. Of course, you'll get to know the management side during your time there but it's better to get to know your work crew. It's a great feeling being able to joke and build a relationship with your work crew even if you're not bilingual because it shows you put the effort to get to know them which they appreciate. I got to know all the work crew during my time there and chatted with every single one of them every time I did go out on the field.

Advice

Something I definitely learned and would like to share with others is dont be afraid to make an uncomfortable change for a good opportunity. Just because it's a different location or a different culture, does not mean you should doubt experiencing it because it was one of the best things of my life. I went to Falfurrias, TX , a town where there is absolutely nothing other than a border patrol checkpoint and three local restaurants. However because of this small town, all the engineers there (including myself) built a great relationship by having weekly BBQ cookouts and poker nights. I built a great connection with all my coworkers and will definitely learn to take the leap and not let any uncomfortable location or scenario doubt where my next experience will be.
