YMCA Camp Seymour

Trip Leader

June - August 2019 • Gig Harbor, WA

What I liked

I was able to work with kids and be outdoors, guiding weeklong kayak trips and multiday backpacking trips.

What I wish was different

The pay is horrible. Working for a nonprofit does not earn much. I made 41.76 per day, 6 days per week, "on the clock" 24 hours per day.

Advice

It's great if you can afford to not make much money and also give a lot of your heart into it. I made a lot of wonderful connections, had a ton of fun, and had the opportunity to make an impact on the world. It also requires putting your heart and soul into it to do it well.

Unit Leader

June - August 2018 • Gig Harbor, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with children, and exposing them to the outdoors in a way that they sometimes wouldnt have been able to. Introducing subjects like marine biology or agriculture from more than just a textbook or a lesson on a whiteboard was invaluable.

What I wish was different

I would have liked open the platform for more discourse to see what could imprve after every week so that we would constantly be fine tuning our programs so that they best fit the needs of both the employees and the kids.

Advice

I would suggest going into this job with an open heart and having the mindset that puts the children first. We get to provide kids with experiences that will shape who they are as growing individuals and to be even a small part of that magic cannot be found anywhere else.
