What I liked

I liked servicing the school districted that I graduated from. I felt like I was directly giving back to my community and it was awesome to network with YES Prep affiliates including alumni younger and older than me.

What I wish was different

I wish more people were a part of the internship. Only about 52 people were selected and I personally knew 3 other friends and relatives that applied and there was a lot of work to be done in the summer before the fall semester began. We were constantly on a time crunch to finish up projects and more personnel would have helped with what we were working on. I left with a lot of unfinished projects started.

Advice

You may be asked to travel and it’s best to separate this internship from other summer obligations like taking a summer class while interning that interrupts you at work. Like I said this internship helps the school district prepare for the return of students so it’s unprofessional to be unavailable during the 9AM-4PM work day when like I also said before, I personally knew other candidates that applied and had more availability and were robbed from the opportunity dedicate more time to the internship.

June - July 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved being able to meet the new 6th graders. I also loved helping my past teachers. It was a wonderful experience giving back to the people who knew I had what it took.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed until I actually started my senior year at college because I wanted to help more with the next school year.

Advice

Make sure your schedule is flexible.
