WSLR + Fogartyville

News Intern

January - May 2019 • Sarasota, FL

What I liked

I really valued how helpful everyone was at the station. From the first day, I was able to get hands-on experience and not do any clerical deskwork. For this position specifically, tasks vary by week. I was originally the only intern so I worked on the activist calendar report and Manatee update. Once there were other interns we worked in shifts so for two weeks I was responsible for pitching ideas, obtaining (and recording) interviews, and editing this down to about three minutes. Another week I did some housekeeping and helped with source gathering. Anything goes you could be creating and editing a promo for an event, conducting an interview, writing stories, networking, and attending events. It is individualized group work. Everyone has their own part but it is all put together and aired at the end of the week as a weekly news podcast. I want to reiterate how awesome everyone is at WSLR because they care about you as a person, and as a community-radio, they let you, for the most part, have free-reign.

Advice

My advice would be to practice using Audacity a lot. It is initially hard to learn how to cut a 15-minute interview down to 3 minutes or less so practice is key. Also, listen to New Radio New College.
