Writers & Books is a literary center based in Rochester, N.Y. We foster and promote reading and writing as lifelong activities for people of all ages and backgrounds within and beyond the greater Rochester area, through educational programs, publications, community events, and author appearances. Writers & Books is one of the nation’s oldest and largest community-based literary centers.
Our programs are numerous and varied, reaching more than 25,000 people per year, and include:
- Writing classes and workshops for youth and adults held at our facilities
- Outreach programs held throughout the community, in schools, hospitals, libraries, senior citizens centers, recreation centers, and social service agencies
- Readings and talks by visiting and regional writers
- Residency programs at our rural retreat center
- An annual Regional Playwriting Competition held in collaboration with Geva Theater Center
- An annual city-wide reading program, “Rochester Reads”
- Internships in literary programming and management for high school and college students
