WRFI Community Radio is an excellent learning experience for students who may have little previous experience with radio journalism. The internship is well structured, but there is plenty of flexibility and room to pursue topics of interest. The interns are always treated fairly and kindly by their supervisor as well as other volunteers at the station. I would encourage any student to intern with WRFI.
What I wish was different
Most of the preparation for the evening news program occurs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., so I wish that I would have oriented my class and co-curricular schedule a bit differently to accommodate this time commitment.
Advice
I would recommend volunteering with the station as a contributing writer for 2-3 months prior to interning. This opportunity allows you to become acquainted with writing for non-profit radio and to familiarize yourself with WRFI's broadcast style by listening to its local news programming.
