WPRI 12 & Fox

Digital Intern

June - August 2019 • East Providence, RI

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with my supervisors and I liked being able to cover the area that I am from. I think I learned a lot about writing for news websites and how to write a good digital story/ headline. From working in the newsroom every day, I was able to observe a lot and learn how a broadcast newsroom runs.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to work with other departments on some days. I really enjoyed working with the digital department, but I sometimes wished that I was learning in other areas as well. I also didn't like that I was sitting at a desk all day and I think it would have been nice to go out with reporters and come back and help them write their digital stories. When I first started, there were a lot of changes happening in the department so I didn't get a proper on-boarding and I wasn't sure if there was any flexibility in the internship to learn in other areas.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is don't be afraid to speak up to your supervisors. If you don't feel like you're really being useful at the moment, don't feel uncomfortable asking if there's anything for you to do; the worst they can say is no. Also, don't be afraid to have a discussion with your supervisors about possibly learning in other departments.
