This past summer I interned on WRI's Sustainability Initiative Team, which handles operational sustainability at WRI. My primary focus was on reviving WRI's zero waste program following the return to office and expanding zero waste programs to other country offices. Within that scope, I had a lot of freedom on how I went about conducting research and curating recommendations, and was encouraged to utilize the background knowledge I had developed by working in higher education sustainability to inform the projects I was working on. My manager was extremely supportive and gave excellent advice while allowing me to make my projects my own. Zero waste was not traditionally her area of expertise and I had a bit more background experience working with zero waste initiatives, so she was very willing to allow me to guide those efforts. Outside of my team, the staff at WRI were very engaged with sustainability initiatives, supportive of my efforts, and generally inviting. It was overall an excellent work environment and I would highly recommend pursuing opportunities at WRI if you get the opportunity.
