What I liked

I loved that this program focused on social emotional learning rather than academic learning. Our classes consisted of creative activities that engaged all sorts of learners.

What I wish was different

I wish we were in person. It would’ve been easier to connect with the students in person. We ran into a lot of tech difficulties, and many people couldn’t join because they didn’t have the right laptops or working WiFi.

Advice

You can prepare as much as you want, but at the end of the day, you can’t control what happens. Be flexible and willing to step in wherever is needed. Your hard work will be recognized.

What I liked

The work environment was welcoming and dynamic. I was able to do a variety of different tasks as well as was trusted to work independently with refugees and clients. The team I worked with was very supportive.

What I wish was different

I left right as a lot of new arrivals were incoming which would have been exciting to experience.

Advice

Ask questions and take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way. It's very easy to put your toes in a variety of roles as a intern and help different people out even if you don't work for or with them directly all you have to do is ask.

What I liked

Great coworkers, advisors were patient and willing to teach interns, completed very hands-on, advanced work, organization has a great staff, mission, and work environment, participated in outside immigration law training events, personal contact with clients

What I wish was different

Work load was very fragmented (super busy for a week or so at a time and then a week or so with almost nothing to do), advisors weren't very responsive to interns' request for more assignments

Advice

Even though the common unpaid internship in the nonprofit sector can be a turn off, it was absolutely worth it. Nonprofits are often in need of as much help as they can get, so even though I did not receive pay I was able to work independently, directly with clients , and on advanced projects that I would not have been able to otherwise.
