Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Teaching Assistant for Robotics Summer Camp at WPI

July - August 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

Working with children for the first time was a fun experience. Many were energetic and very excited to see what we would be learning next.

What I wish was different

Some of the others who worked at this camp that had were expected to work alongside students who had behavioral challenges did not take their responsibilities seriously. I was disappointed to see that some of other workers' laziness was impeding certain children from gaining a better experience at the summer camp.

Advice

I have realized that working with children is tiring yet rewarding and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys helping others.

Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I liked gaining the experience of working as a research assistant. It was a new type of job for me and the skills I gained from it were irreplaceable.

What I wish was different

Nothing! It was a great experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity.

Advice

Make sure to reach out to professors on if they are doing research! They are always looking for people or can direct you to other professors who are looking for assistants.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

Gained experience working in a lab setting, reviewing literature and becoming familiar with some equipment and software

What I wish was different

Time spent there wasn't quite enough to do much more besides learning about the subject matter and assisting with preliminary material testing

Advice

To make it more worthwhile, limit your other obligations so you can spend more time on this work, or be prepared to work on it for more than a few months

Residential Program Adviser

June - August 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with kids in middle school as well as high school. For me I did not see it as a big deal being their RPA but for them we made a big impact on how they viewed WPI and colleges in general. I was happy to be apart of their summer and learn from them as much as they learned from me. It was a great experience and I would definitely do it again. I met so many new people and it was a great work environment.

Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

Pay was good. The PhD fellow I was working with was very enthusiastic. Felt like the research I was doing could have lots of potential in the future, whether it be for more research or a potential business idea. Had a good amount of responsibility, but not too much that I felt overwhelmed.

What I wish was different

Wanted more to do at times, however this was sometimes not possible since the experimenting we were doing required a lot of time (ie leaving mixtures stirring, heating, etc for extended periods of time)

Advice

Be open to learning and doing research on your own. I was originally very unfamiliar with the research/experimenting we were doing, so I had to learn about it on my own. By the end of my time there I was very familiar with it and had learned a lot.

Office Assistant

June - August 2018 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work with different professors and help them prepare for the up and coming year. They would explain their class to me and I would help with paperwork and file work for them.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been more hands on but for what it was it was a lot of fun.

Advice

The office I worked in was not my field of study at all and had nothing to do with it but that did not mean I was not useful. My advice would be to try everything out once, it is okay to ask questions and if it is different from what you know it is okay to learn about it.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2018 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I really enjoythe laid-off style of work I get to do. There are clear deliverables that are outlined, however the process of reaching those deliverables is not specified. This allows for a certain level of flexibility which is necessary for research which can be unpredictable.

What I wish was different

I wish I was paid ;)

Advice

The one piece of advice I would give is that if you want to do research get in touch with the Professor of interest as soon as possible because lab positions are very competitive.

Research Engineer

July - September 2018 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

The close work with grad students and being able to use SolidWorks as a tool for research.

What I wish was different

I think I would have liked more availability from our supervisor to discuss problems faced.

Advice

Sometimes someone can’t provide you answers, so look for other sources like research papers, studies, or even YouTube tutorials.

research fellow

June 2018 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I was only working with one other student, and our advisor didn't have any other student projects this summer, so we had a lot of resources at our disposal, and learned a lot about a variety of topics in advanced mathematics. It was very cool to be able to collaborate directly with a professor. I also had a lot of freedom over the topics and problems I chose to pursue, which was different from my last research position, and I liked it better that way.

What I wish was different

I don't really have any complaints

Advice

I would recommend that everyone try out academic research at some point in their education. It's very different from solving problem sets (and presumably from working for a company). I think it was good for both my intellectual development as well as my general personal growth, and it helped me cement my plans to attend graduate school.
