Woodward Academy

Youth Counselor

May - August 2020 • Woodward, IA

What I liked

Working with the kids was great. It can be a fun place to work, and you develop really good relationships with your coworkers as well as the clients. There is no shortage of hours, and they give out over time very liberally if that's what you're looking for.

What I wish was different

The scheduling can be rough. You will rarely get a weekend off, and working multiple 16 hour shifts a week is common. It's very difficult to develop a healthy work - life balance.

Advice

It takes a week or two to really grasp the norms of the workplace so just ask your coworkers about literally anything. Also be comfortable saying no. It's really easy to be taken advantage of when supervisors and coworkers ask you to pick up extra shifts or overnights nearly every day.
