Woodard & Curran

Consulting Intern

May - August 2023 • Andover, MA

What I liked

I liked that I had the opportunity to go on-site a good amount. I learned how to use ArcGIS Pro and got some experience with technical writing.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work on more projects. I felt like there sometimes wasn't enough work for me to do.

Advice

I would advise people to speak up about what they want to work on and ask often for more work if they don't have enough to do or want to work on something else that interests them.

Engineering Intern

June 2019 • Andover, MA

What I liked

During my time, I participated in a water sampling program measuring chlorine residual levels and sampling for Coliform. I created a google maps emulating the City of Lawrence’s fire hydrants location and hydrants flow rating according to the NFPA to be used externally by the Lawrence Fire Department. Using AutoCAD, I combined drinking water, wastewater and gas designs into one drawings to outline potential conflicts. Lastly, I attend Bid openings, complete bid reviews, tabulations and even independently oversaw water main installation. It was such an empowering experience to be given a generous amount of responsibility and make a noticeable impact.

Advice

Be flexible. Some days you may expect to be in the office and you end up having to jump out on-site, it's very common and a great skill to have if you're interested in a career in consulting. Also be willing to take on work in areas that are not your expertise. It's an internship and they know you're learning. Taking on new task may connect you to new people in the office expanding your network.
