Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Katy, TX

What I liked

Everyone was super friendly and helpful. I learned a lot this past summer and had many opportunities to go to vender shops. I also got the chance to go out to see the project we were working on. We were working on an off shore oil rig named Peregrino, being built in Corpus Christie to be placed off the shore of Brazil. We took a day trip down there and toured the site and it was an unforgettable experience. Everything becomes so real when it's no longer just P&ID's on a computer screen.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer!

Advice

Be ready to work. Do NOT take a summer class. I had friends at other internships who took summer classes along with their internships and they would just work on their classes while they were at work. This was not the case for me. I took Differential Equations this summer along with the internship and it was crazy hard. My work allowed us to put in 40-60 hours a week AND this internship was an hour or more away from my home. I struggled to get a B in this class when it wasn't really that hard. My time was very limited and this was my first internship so I did not know what to expect. It also depends on your project manager, how much work you are expected to do. My manager had us working around the clock while we were there with little to know down time. During lunch I sat with other interns from other branches and they said their job was pretty laid back. It all depends on who you work under.
