Wonderland Camp

Camp Counselor

May - August 2022 • Rocky Mount, MO

What I liked

I liked the experience of working with other people with disabilities and special needs, and it was fun to work.

What I wish was different

A better attitude to some of the people that work there.

Advice

If this is something you want to do, I would recommend signing up as soon as possible, so you can come in for a week to learn what to expect and what you should do, and I would get used to sharing a whole can with other people for 11 weeks. I would also recommend having to deal with people with various disabilities which could affect on how you work their and you will be questioning on what kind of personal care you can work with like helping with the bathroom and brushing teeth. You will also dealing with some behaviors from campers. You won't have to deal with these if you don't want to. As this job you may not always get the best sleep, so if you can't handle this issue we'll, I would not recommend it. However it is a good experience getting to work with people with special needs and you could have fun doing it and have fun working there and you will meet great people.

What I liked

Each week you were moved cabins which meant you not only got to work with new campers, but you got to work with different staff as well. I believe this aspect helped me grow as an individual and pushed me to learn great team work. Another aspect I enjoyed was that I got to learn a lot of how to every person is different and how to work with their specific needs.

What I wish was different

The weekly check in process was always stressful and overwhelming. I do know they have made changes to this process and I’m excited to see how it helps.

Advice

Working at Wonderland Camp is hard work and can be very overwhelming at times. I would tell you take everything in and just enjoy the pic experience. It is the time of your life and hopefully it’ll change your life in the best way.

What I liked

I like working with the people that the camp serves. I also enjoy getting to make new lifelong friends.

What I wish was different

I wish that some of the workers would realize that this job is not strictly a place to make friends and find a boyfriend/girlfriend. It’s about the campers that come every week and we should be working to make it the best time for them.

Advice

Don’t take things personal. This job can be very emotional, and some people blame themselves for things that happen. Behaviors happen everyday, but the individual makes that choice, or it’s involuntary. There is nothing that someone can do to change a person in 5 days.

What I liked

I liked how I got to meet many different people of all ages, races, and ethnicities. I got to learn about different disabilities and how people do not let that affect their everyday life. The people I got to meet, helped show me what life is like when you make the most out of everything. They taught me things that I never knew about.

What I wish was different

I wish the training process was different. There were things that we kind of just had to learn how to do on our own and it made it a little difficult at times.

Advice

Go in with an open mind. I didn’t know what I was expecting it to be like. It was a very new experience that I had to adjust too. I learned so much about things I had no idea about before camp started.
