Student assistant

July 2019 • Springfield, OH

What I liked

I love the flexibility of the position and the fulfillment of it. Most of the jobs on campus have a tendency to feel less productive, but at the registrar I always have something to do. I feel valuable to the department and not like I’m just someone who gets passed along the work no one else wants to do.

What I wish was different

In the summer, we had difficulty with being low staffed. The work load felt heavier than I anticipated, but I still enjoyed the productivity and high paced work environment. The department has since hired more staff members and it has been very beneficial to the operation of the department.

Advice

Be prepared to work! While some jobs on campus are good for getting homework done, don’t plan to get your homework finished during your shift as the registrar will have a lot of work for you to do.

University Communications Office Intern

August 2020 • Springfield, OH

What I liked

I have loved all aspects of this job. I have gotten to write some incredible stories about some amazing alumni all while strengthening my editing, researching, and interpersonal skills.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to work in-house, but the current global situation made this position remote. I will still able to meet with my employer and co-workers; we just had to be creative.

Advice

I would suggest investing in a high-quality planner to manage long-term projects that is separate from other planners. This helped me immensely and allowed me to meet deadlines efficiently.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2020 • Springfield, OH

What I liked

I loved doing research on campus. I got to see friends and faculty all summer while also getting a hands on experience doing research. You learn more when you are dialed in on one thing and actively doing that rather than passively just learning about it. It was fun doing a project all summer.

What I wish was different

COVID-19 set new challenges while trying to do research that I had not had to deal with the summer before, but we got through it. It was hard to keep a set schedule which was unfortunate and made things feel less productive but with everything going on we just had to stay flexible.

Advice

Be involved and do everything. Do everything your head of the research asks whether that be literature searches, doing write ups or the best part doing hands on research because it is all a learning experience and adds to the value of what you are doing.

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2019 • Springfield, OH

What I liked

I liked being able to conduct my research on my own time and be productive with my own methods.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more resources to run more calculations, as my calculations were so large that only a few could be run at a time.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask your advisor questions or to collaborate with other researchers! They all have different opinions and viewpoints that could change things for you.
