Risk Advisory Services Intern

June - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment that Wipfli provides. Everyone was very helpful in providing guidance on assignments I was stuck on and was able to help and answer any questions that I had.

What I wish was different

Not much, it was a great experience to work for Wipfli. The only thing I would wish for is to have more people in the office when I came in. Unfortunately, that is the world we live in now after Covid.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and set up time with people to get guidance if you are stuck.

Audit and Accounting Intern

June - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture at Wipfli and the people that I collaborated with. Everyone was willing to meet with me and answer any questions I had regarding client work or career advice. They were very generous and treated us to meals and events and even a trip to St. Louis to meet other interns and to begin our training.

What I wish was different

With a summer internship in public accounting, it was difficult to stay busy and find consistent, meaningful work. Summers in public accounting are not as busy as other times during the year so it makes sense as to why the interns were not as busy. Although, the more that I reached out to others and put my name out there, the more meaningful work I was able to find.

Advice

I would recommend making the most out of your internship by using your resources provided to you. Use Wipfli's online resources to explore various career paths and try to meet as many coworkers as possible. Set up time to meet and discuss what they do at Wipfli and why and how they ended up in the role they are in!

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Rockford, IL

What I liked

I like the people and the team. They are close-knit and care about each other and will try to help you as much as possible. Wipfli Experience Week was a great opportunity to meet other interns and leaders while doing training. There are also many fun work outings for more networking opportunities. There are several different industries at Wipfli and there are meetings held on a weekly basis to introduce them to you. If one stands out, you can reach out and they can give you work to see if you like it or not. Overall, I like the experience I gained while working on audits and being able to network with others.

What I wish was different

Work was slow at times, considering it's the summer and not busy season, so I wish there would have been more work to keep me busy.

Advice

As long as you try hard, get along with others, and ask questions - you will fit right in.

Accounting Intern

June - August 2022 • Billings, MT

What I liked

My coworkers were incredibly knowledgeable, fun, and flexible. The work was not overwhelming, and I always had resources available to me if I had questions or concerns about what I was doing. Meeting everyone at our intern training was really fun, and the team-building exercises helped us to get to know the folks we'd be working with.

What I wish was different

Most of my team worked from home and, while I spent virtually all of my time in the office, I was usually the only one there. We all got together once a week to work mornings in the office and have lunch, but I would have liked to to get to know everyone a bit better.

Advice

Internships can be a little intimidating at first, especially if it is your first introduction into the business world. Wipfli was very accommodating, everyone was very friendly, and there was always help available. It's a good idea to come into the office every once in a while, and make sure to get to know your team!

Audit and Tax Intern

June - August 2023 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the staff that I was able to network with. I was able to go to Wipfli Experience week and was able to connect with other interns as well. I think a big game changer for this internship is the pooled internship style. One week, you would be on audit and then another you would be on tax. It is a great internship to solidify which path you want to take in your career.

What I wish was different

The first half of my internship was very slow. There was not much work, which was completely understandable. We were aware there was a possible since it was a slow season. One thing that took up a lot of time was intern onboarding and computer access. I would say that the technology should be equipped with the necessary items that interns need, prior to onboarding. It became a real hassle, but the IT department did a great job with resolving issues as fast as possible.

Advice

Network with as many people in the office, whether you are spring or summer. You never know when you are going to be needing more work, and by having though relationships, it makes it easier! I would suggest, if you are wanting to have a low-pressure, slower-paced experience to dip your toes into the public accounting lifestyle, I would do the summer internship. Alternately, the spring internship will keep you busy, and you will have plenty of work. Decide what works best for you and how retain information!

Financial Advisor Intern

May - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

My favorite aspect of this internship was that I was given the latitude to explore innovative solutions for more effective client engagements, which were ultimately adopted as standard practice in our Milwaukee-Chicago region. I lead this initiative from start to finish, assessing, designing and implementing the new process that would make client engagement simpler, yet more effective.

Staff Accountant

September 2018 • Eau Claire, WI

What I liked

It has been fun to work with different clients and have a mix of duties that keeps me engaged. I've been trusted and given responsibilities right away, but I know that I have a support system so that I don't feel overwhelmed.

What I wish was different

There aren't any major experiences that I wish had been different. It is important to look forward rather than back. It's important to learn from the past to improve yourself moving forward, but do not dwell on past failures or successes.

Advice

It's important in your professional career to build connections with people, both within your company and outside of your company, and keep up with those connections as it is always nice to have people to share experiences with. Connections are also a great place to start if you're thinking about looking for a different position or helping someone come on board with your current employer.
