Aquatics Manager

May - August 2019 • Winchester, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to play a large role in the running of the pool facility. I had the responsibilities of making schedules, hiring employees, and running monthly inservice trainings.

What I wish was different

At times, I wish I had the ability to work overtime hours. Often I was not able to be there for certain events during busy weeks because I was only able to work 40 hours, but I feel that it was important for me to be there at times I was not allowed to work. Even as the head manager, I was not able to be present during all hours of operation.

Advice

It is very important to have customer service skills. I would advise anyone interested in this type of position to have experience working with the public in some capacity, because as a manager, you will be in direct contact with the concerns of patrons.

Golf Course Outside Operations

May - September 2019 • Winchester, MA

What I liked

Working outside and being involved in a golf community.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have worked the hours and days that I would have wanted to work (not worked the weekends)

Advice

You have to put yourself out there and try to make friends with all the people you meet because it is so valuable to have people to reach out to in the real world.

Outside Operations

May - August 2019 • Winchester, MA

What I liked

Mark Bezjian is the head of the Outside Operations department. Mark is a comedic boss who is fun to work for, yet he is stern when he needs to be. I enjoyed the relationships I formed with country club members and employees. The outside operations department employs only a handful of people. I enjoyed how close the outside operations team was. I made so many friendships with college students and even older employees. The best part of the job was most definitely the relationships formed with employees and club members. I also made friendships with staff in different departments. Every employee knows every other employee to some degree even if we don't directly work with each other. A sense of community is most definitely formed with employees.

What I wish was different

The one thing I would change about this job is the micromanagement of employees. I understand that management wants things to run smoothly, but the employees should be entrusted more. The outside operations staff has the ability to run things smoothly.

Advice

I recommend that employees network with the members of the country club. Many club members are doctors, lawyers, and architects. I could not think of a better place to network than a country club, so college employees need to take advantage of this opportunity.
