The Whittier Area Literacy Council is a wonderful organization to be a part of. I am constantly in awe of the compassion that the tutors and students in this program give and receive. It is a unique job and one where you are constantly learning along with your students and are able to give back to the community by way of teaching. The environment is wonderfully nurturing as well and there is a strong sense of camaraderie among the tutors who work here.
What I wish was different
The program has been wonderful thus far and there is nothing that I would change about my experiences.
Advice
A piece of advice that I would give to any prospective tutors is to remember that teaching something to a student can take some time, but it is such a unique experience when a student learns to master a skill. It is also good to remember that you don't need thousands of strategies to teach well, just try to teach with an open mind and an open heart and anything is possible.

What I liked
I loved that I was able to work with students and see their accomplishments first hand. Something about a student being excited to learn is such an amazing feeling. I also loved that it was something so personal between me and the student, I got to build a relationship with them and their parents/family. I felt like I had purpose.
What I wish was different
Unfortunately everything was via zoom, I just wish we could have met in person. I would have loved to work with other tutors and meet face to face with my students.
Advice
One piece of advice is to not give up. Sometimes things will be difficult, you may get frustrated and feel like you can't do it any more. But, it is important to know that it will be worth it in the end, you will see your results, you will feel accomplished. You are 100% capable.
