What I liked

The work was long, hard, but very rewarding. I worked with a small kitchen staff that I've come to respect and appreciate, especially my boss. The other summer staff members accepted me very quickly into the group, even though I had never been to The Springs before. As an overall group, we became very close with each other and helped each other to grow.

What I wish was different

The men and their families who live there full time and run the hotel year round, I found, to be a bit stuck in their ways and out of touch with the modern world. There is also an ignorance about Christian groups like Catholicism and Orthodoxy that held a negative prejudice.

Advice

Realizing that any Christian organization like this one has just as many internal flaws as any other organization, either between people or in the system of how everything is run. A lot of the families that went through were loving people and loving Christians, and the experience is for them more so than you.

What I liked

WSS has an amazing summer work environment, especially for young Christians looking for mentorship from mature believers and friendship with peers from all around the country. Its summer programs are geared toward believers in the military, so the culture is oriented around those with a military background. It has a variety of summer positions for college-aged students, ranging from your somewhat standard camp-counselor type roles to maintaining the grounds, working with horses, to working with children in a classroom-like environment.
