I enjoyed the independence I was given in exploring areas that interested me. There is an organized internship program present, so they tried showing us a different department each week. I was able to do actual work such as load calculations and system design.
What I wish was different
More interns hired in the engineering department. More time in the field. Critique my system design methods, talk about different design philosophies.
Advice
Talk to as many engineers as possible, and especially personnel in the construction department; they are the key to getting out into the field. Say yes to as many things as you can handle. Go to any out of office events to get to know the other staff better.
