Advice

It is intimidating to be in a completely new setting and out of your comfort zone...but before you know it, you'll catch your own flow. Mistakes are inevitable, but always see them as valuable learning experiences and not as personal failures.

Take the opportunity to work for WellStar as an intern because you will get to do rotations in other departments in IT that might be more to your liking.

What I liked

Gave me a good opportunity to interact with patients and learn from other professionals on the floor.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a longer orientation period to become better acclimated to the environment. I had to learn pretty fast the pace of the unit I was working on because I had only 3 days of orientation on my floor. Thankfully, the other staff members on the floor were very helpful to me and made themselves available when they could if I needed assistance with anything.

Advice

Be open about experiencing new things! Every day is a learning opportunity, and you will be faced with challenges that will help you grow as a professional in your field. Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

What I liked

In-depth experience opportunities with different business and healthcare applications and services including but not limited to ServiceNow, Epic EHR, Tableau, etc. There are many different platforms and individuals to talk to in order to gain advice and knowledge about different facets of information technology that can aid in personal and professional growth. The (ongoing) internship allows me to explore my interests without locking me into a specific pathway.

What I wish was different

Options for ongoing interns to receive further benefits such as raises. A way for well-performing interns to be guaranteed a job instead of whether or not to "wait it out" to see if the company will hire you.

Advice

If you're interested in information technology I would highly recommend the internship program - it is filled with unique and kindhearted individuals with a passion to help others using healthcare. I've learned an unfathomable amount of skills at WellStar and I continue to make myself a better, smarter individual by the day.
