Physical Therapy Shadow

July 2019 • Chambersburg, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed being placed in different locations to gain the most experience. I got to interact with many different types of therapists and learn their unique methods of evaluation and treatment.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to spend with specific therapists. Being moved around didn't give me much of an opportunity to form stronger connections.

Advice

Speak out! Don't be passive in your internships or experiences. Ask questions and learn as much as you can.

Nurse Extern

June - August 2019 • Ephrata, PA

What I liked

I was able to follow a nurse, and do what she did for her entire shift. Working with nurses on their normal nurse helped me to better understand what a normal shift will be like. I was also able to see and gain experience with many different patients. This externship allowed me to see two different units, which allowed me to gain experience in two different units!

What I wish was different

I wish that we had been able to be more involved in the medication administration. I understand the legality, but the preceptors could have asked me more about the medications before giving it to the patient.

Advice

Emerse yourself in the experiences/internships/clinicals that you have over the years. This is the best way for students to learn. Nursing school will not teach you everything, but you can gain a lot if you allow yourself to learn from everything you do, but you must still realize that after school you will still be learning!
