Waverley Country Club

Food and Beverage Intern

June - August 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I like that all the managers and general manager were so involved with my everyday work day. Were always open to answering my questions when I was unsure as well as allowing me to move through the different departments to experience the different areas of the country club.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to spend more time in the departments I was most interested in and had more information given to me leading up to me moving up to Portland.

Advice

I would tell the next person who was to go to Waverley that be prepared with really slow days and rather busy days as well. Members were unpredicatable when it came to requests when being seated and when sat.

Manager Intern in Food & Beverage

May - September 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

Not only did I learn about managing our two restaurants, I did get an inside look at other departments including our Golf Shop, Greens Department, and Events Department. We took a tour around other clubs in Portland to compare and contrast the different kinds of clubs in the area.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to meet other interns at other clubs. I wish I had continued to network a little more while I was there.

Advice

Definitely expect to work hard and work late nights sometimes, but as long as you come to work with a good attitude it’ll make your shift a lot easier!

Waiter

May - July 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The management was really good and scheduling was flexible.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was a great summer job.

Advice

As a college student look for jobs that need more staff over the summer to make the process of returning to that job easier.

Server

May - August 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I enjoyed the people I worked with and those I served. There is something special about serving the same people all the time and getting the opportunity to create a relationship with them. Being a waitress in most settings means interacting with a stranger for 1-2 hours and probably never seeing them again but here you knew you'd see them again so the service you give needs to be top notch.

What I wish was different

I think sometimes the work atmosphere could lean to the unprofessional side of things but that didn't bother me too much.

Advice

Make the most of everyday. If you come in unhappy or in a bad mood and that mood affect you work/performance no one is going to enjoy what they are giving/receiving. At least if you put on a smile and continue to treat people as if its the best day ever then thyey are going to be appreciative and treat you well back which will then make your bad day a little better. I guess long story short, don't put your bad day on other people because it's not their fault for the other things going on in your life.
