W.K. Kellogg Foundation

Office intern

June - December 2017 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I liked being surrounded by program officers and other professionals who could educate me on how grant-writing, research, non-profit work, and local government all play a role in forming equitable outcomes for marginalized groups.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more projects. I got the chance to form the office’s newsletter, which was sent to grantees and other foundation offices and that experience was very enjoyable. I however wish that I could have done so a little more.

Advice

If I could provide any advice, I would encourage interns to always ask questions, no matter how it may look. The language of foundation work was a lot to take on, but the one thing that helped me greatly was asking questions and being open to new information. Your superiors want to see you grow/learn and will find ways to help you do so if you are open to it.
