Public Relations Intern

June - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The individuals I worked with were informative, encouraging, and enthusiastic about the work they did. It was infectious! They were able to teach me about the public relations industry and what individuals in their industry were looking for in future employees. I learned a ton of skills and was given a lot of responsibility in such a small amount of time, and I instantly felt a part of the team since the work I was given was going to be directly seen by the clients. I couldn't have asked for a better company to work for this summer.

What I wish was different

The pandemic robbed me of certain aspects of the internship I wish I got to explore. I would have loved to see the office culture first hand IN THE OFFICE, rather than a virtual imitation of it. Also, since the job was remote, I felt like I was on the computer for 10 hours a day, when I know walking into the office in the morning, spending time with other interns to get lunch, shutting off the lights when you leave--its the small things that usually break up that screen time and I really wasn't able to get into a routine at all. I had to give up my SF apartment because I didn't want to pay to hole up in an apartment and live in a city I would never see due to the Stay at Home orders in California. I don't think I got the FULL experience at the company, and now as I am applying to go back, I am worried that I might make a mistake.

Advice

The first month was the hardest for me. I thought I was not learning the things I needed to fast enough and I was worried I was a burden to the team. It is really important to listen to your superiors. They told me the skills I was learning take time to develop and they were not wrong. I was given a wonderful mentor and she gave me the confidence to tackle any assignment they gave me. Also, if you have the bandwidth, take on news assignments! Volunteer to help your teammates! Employers love to see it!
