Logistics Purchasing Intern

August 2021 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

The team is very collaborative

What I wish was different

I wish I was not the only intern on the team

Advice

You really need to be good with pacing yourself and doing work on your own or else it is hard to get anything done. Also, don't be afraid to reach out for help.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

Learned about the manufacturing setting. Had a lot of freedom over my project.

What I wish was different

I worked on a project by myself. I wish I had worked more with other interns / coworkers.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can. There is a lot to learn and it helps to be a quick learner to pick everything up.

Order Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Dublin, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed doing technical work such as creating python scripts for automation, learning new software such as Microsoft PowerBI and Microsoft PowerApps and directly working with them, helping my mentors with relevant tasks, meeting the people who work there, and seeing how a company functions as a team member.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have met the other interns for a more enjoyable experience, but couldn't at the time due to Covid. They told me they usually have a formal internship program where they allow interns to meet and hang out, but they didn't have that last summer.

Advice

If you want to work on a specific task related to your role, ask about it and they'll do their best to assign you relevant work. You get out what you put in!

Trade Compliance Development Intern

May 2018 - December 2019 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

- extremely flexible with your school schedule - positive environment with many friendly people - the Uptime Center building is neat, clean and organized - HR encourages communication if needed - my department encouraged me to extend my internship throughout the summer/school semesters - in the summer session, interns had the opportunity to drive Mack and Volvo trucks on the Greensboro campus test track and visit the NRV production facility in Virginia

What I wish was different

Nothing, I love Volvo's company culture and how they value employees work/life balance. I hope to continue with this company in the future.

Advice

Apply for as many positions as you can, each manager is different and are looking for a unique candidate. Do not get discouraged if you are denied, keep trying to apply. Volvo is a great company to start your first internship with!

Mechanical Engineer Intern

What I liked

Company culture

What I wish was different

Covid kind of wrecked my internship. I still got to finish it from home, but it definitely wasn’t the experience I wanted.

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunity to learn as much as possible from your mentors and teammates. The engineers at Volvo are brilliant and are more than willing to help you learn, just be brave enough to ask.

Quality Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

I absolutely loved the people that I worked with and company culture that Volvo has. It is apparent that the full-time staff is always willing to provide advise/guidance in any desired area. Additionally, Volvo always encouraged their employees to pursue life-long learning, and would often send their employees to different trainings based on their interests as well as for their jobs.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been immersed in the daily work of the department I was in a bit more. I was able to observe a lot, but I wasn't able to help with the work load at all. Parallel to this, I wish that I could've had a bit more of a work load. Especially during some of the weeks that my manager was gone, I had to find some trivial things to work on.

Advice

Try to approach this experience with passion. Even if the work itself is not something you are passionate about, try to apply your passion and your excitement to be alive to the work that you do. Not only will this propel you forward at Volvo, but it will also aid in networking around the company.

Maintenance Engineer

May - August 2018 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

Truck assembly plant, was very cool atmosphere and awesome to see such a large production of large trucks being made.

What I wish was different

The company seemed very unorganized and didn't pay much attention to their interns. Many of the other interns did absolutely nothing and the company seemed to be fine with it. The company had many problems that could have been worked on by each intern but was neglected.

Advice

Push for more work, always ask for something more.

Market Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

I was able to meet many people across departments and everyone was extremely nice and helpful and wanted to get to know me on a personal level. I was given a lot of responsibility at this internship and was able to take ownership of my project and even present it to the leasing team at the end of the summer. The work was challenging and I was able to gain experience with Excel and analyzing data. There were over 100 interns during the summer and we had weekly intern events, which were great and it was awesome to meet interns from across the country. We also got to drive one of the Mack Trucks, which was a very unique experience! I would definitely recommend this internship to anyone interested in the transportation industry or who wants to learn more about trucks.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can to learn more about the industry. Get to know people outside of your department as they can be very helpful if you have questions.

Quality Assurance Intern

June - August 2018 • Rockleigh, NJ

What I liked

The people. It was by far the best work experience I have ever had. I enjoyed what I did and who I did it with.

What I wish was different

I wish my department wasn't moving to South Carolina so I could go back again.

Advice

I have worked in the corporate world before and I was not the biggest fan of it. After that experience I feared what the real world really had in store and that all jobs would be as unexciting as my first. However, I found out this summer that's not the case. Your entire work experience changes on a dime by the people you work with.

I liked that I was able to work as an actual engineer with real purpose. I also enjoyed the opportunity that I was given to develop myself not only as a student and employee, but also as a human being!

What I wish was different

I wish that I didn't have to come back to school!

Advice

I would suggest to initiate your own work. A lot of my success at Volvo Group is due to work that I asked for or found myself! It definitely benefits you to be a mover and a groover!
