VMware, Inc.

Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2022 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

My manager at VMware was very helpful, encouraging, and understanding. The project my mentor gave me was meaningful and challenging. I was able to take ownership of my project and had lots of autonomy while working on it. Since my internship was remote things were very flexible with working hours.

What I wish was different

There was not as much mentorship as I had hoped with the internship, as my mentor was extremely busy and did not have lots of time to meet with me.

Advice

Make sure to communicate as much as possible. If you feel like you are not being as successful as you can be communicate with your mentor/manager and work with them to improve your situation. They are there to help you and want you to have a good internship experience. Don't be afraid to reach out.

PCS Ops Intern

June - August 2022 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

Had full ownership of a project I was passionate about. I was about to network with over 30+ professionals due to the nature of my project. Micromanaging does not exist within this business group--so I had complete creative freedom.

What I wish was different

More in-person events would've been nice. Networking is crucial for internships.

Advice

Take initiative and explore the business group you're in. Understand their functions and products.

More intern events but with COVID, they did the best they could.

Sales Support Intern

June - August 2018 • Austin, TX

What I liked

The culture of the company, the people and the impact VMware’s products/solutions have on education institutions and governments, as well as start up businesses and enterprise businesses.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing. I sat long and hard when they asked me. I guess the only think I’d change would be to get the interns on the phones more. This role can lead into an inside sales rep position and selling over the phone and building relationships with customers over the phone is a crucial part of the job. Takes time to get comfortable making calls and dealing with rejection.

Advice

Network. If you’re working out of an office, go out of your way to introduce yourself to everyone. From the custodian to the Senior director of the office, network with everyone.

This internship like most is what you make of it. The team and company is there to support you if you show your motivation and effort, but won't do the same if you have no drive.

Social Media and Content Intern

June - August 2017 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

Everything! Great mentorship program, very competitive pay for an intern, opportunities to take initiatives on projects.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out after you apply on handshake. A lot of time the recruiter's information is listed on Handshake (which is how my position was) and I reached out after applying. I didn't get a reply. I sent a follow up. Then, after my SECOND follow up email, I got a response and an offer to interview for the position. If you want it, don't let it go, pursue it as best as you can.
