What I liked
I loved every part of it! We did “The Wiz,” and to be surrounded by black people was such an amazing experience. In the theatre world, there are a only few shows that contain an all black cast, and it really makes you feel magical inside when you get to work with people who look like you.
What I wish was different
I wish I had spoken up sooner because there was one person who felt the need to be not pleasant, and I wish I would I said something sooner. It did not change my experience and in fact it made it better. However, not saying something worked too. I was taught professionalism in those moments. I learned what it means that some things do not dignify a response. I was there for the art, not for drama.
Advice
I would say, push yourself to new heights. I was surrounded by beautiful dancers, amazing singers, and outstanding actors who pushed me to be better everyday. I learned from them and I was able to successfully get up there and exist in a world where these professionals were. Don’t be scared of a challenge. Do not stay comfortable and complacent. If you are the smartest person in any given room, pack up your things and find a new room.
