Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum

Programs Intern

May - August 2018 • Virginia Beach, VA

What I liked

I loved this internship experience because it gave me so much room to expand my knowledge and skills while still feeling supported in the process. I was able to see all the different things needed to make a museum function, and I was able to get hands-on experience in all facets of museum work. This job made me feel much more confident in my skills, and made me more certain of what specific career I wanted to persue.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been able to see some of the programs that I created put into action. The one issue I had with this experience was that it was very short. Even several months is not enough time to truly see your impact on an institution, so I feel like I left a lot of work undone or unfinished. Still, that just gives me more incentive to visit and see how the museum has changed or improved since I was there.

Advice

If you want an internship or other work experience to be meaningful, you have to fully commit and give it your all. Show up every day, put in 100%, and you will see rewards. I learned so much just over the course of a few months, so it is possible to get a lot out of these experiences if you put a lot of effort in initially.
