Research Assistant

January - August 2019 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I was able to learn key time management skills as well as how to take initiative to follow through with things that needed to happen, like figuring out issues I was having with my payroll.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and apply for something you don't think you have all the skills for! If you stand out as a candidate with qualities your hirer wants, they will train you in skills you don't yet have.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - July 2019 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I really liked getting to experience research full time and getting to run my own experiment.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more dining options in the dining hall (e.g. sandwich station) while I was at Villanova for the summer. There were also always a lot of campers in the dining hall but not a lot of food, so they ran out of food a lot.

Advice

It's a good experience if you are interested in doing research and want to see what it's like full time or if you want to run your own experiment.

Resident Assistant

May - July 2019 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work with STOVS and be a mentor and resource to incoming freshman for three weeks!

What I wish was different

I wish we would’ve had longer to bond with one another and learn about more resources offered on campus including CRF because we did meet with the study abroad services but never addressed the options for fellowships and things they can do freshman and sophomore year!

Advice

to whom much is given, much is expected. as stovs members and staff, I have learned that all of these opportunities and head starts we are given, we are expected to be good role models and people on campus! we are supposed to give back to our Villanova Community in whichever way we see fit as long as we do so.

Villanova Undergraduate Research Fellow Recipient

May - August 2018 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed conducting research and having the opportunity to really explore an area of interest to me: speech perception and production. I liked working so closely with my mentor and forming a good relationship with him. I learned a lot about the scientific method and what goes into conducting an experiment and producing good data. I liked learning new statistical and computer programing techniques and methods, and reading journal articles to better understand my area of research.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have done something this summer in addition to working on my research project, such as another job, internship, shadowing opportunity, taking a class, etc.

Advice

I would advise other students to participate in research one way or another. Research helps to keep science and society moving forward. I would take the opportunity as an undergraduate to gain experience working in a lab, under a mentor, and to have the chance to apply what you learn in a classroom and from readings. Research is a great tool to better understand problems and work out questions, theories and ideas that have yet to be solved or understood.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - July 2018 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I liked the ability to work on the project on my own time. It was a flexible environment.

What I wish was different

It was advertised as a stipend but was actually an hourly wage pay system.

Advice

Doing research over the summer opened my eyes to many things: what research can be like, how to write an academic paper, how imperative grant proposals are, how to store and analyze data, etc. It was an eye opening experience that I was lucky to have.

Physics Research Assistant

May - July 2018 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I like the Research Environment. My research teammate was an upperclassman, but there were a lot of other students staying over the summer and doing research. In the physics department, we all shared a common room to do our work. We did a lot of fun talk but also worked a lot. Overall, it was really a good experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a little more funding for our department so that we can afford to buy high-speed computers that could make things a lot easy. I was using my computer for the research, which sometimes, did not do very well to run huge chunk of data.

Advice

I would say definitely go for it, at least once in your college career. I know everyone does not like the research-intensive work, and a lot of people do not do it thinking they are not smart enough. Well, I thought the same thing, but still, I did it. So, don't worry, and try it out. After all, college is all about trying out new things and measuring your limits.

ACSP Summer Researcher

June - August 2018 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

I loved getting to do research outside of my major and I loved getting to be exposed to all sorts of things that I would not have had the time to learn in a one semester class.

What I wish was different

Advice

My research this summer is exactly what I made of it, so I would encourage people to research something that they are absolutely passionate about.

Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Villanova, PA

What I liked

What I wish was different

The experience was very biology-driven, moreso than I expected it to be. I would've preferred to do more chemistry because that is the area I am most interested in.

Advice

Exploring different experiences during both the summers and the semesters during college are beneficial to teach you what you want and don't want for your future. This summer taught me, for example, that I don't want to pursue the biology aspects of biochemistry in chemical engineering, as well as that I don't want to do research.
