Vera House, Inc.

Legal Intern

May - August 2023 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I loved the welcoming environment in the office, spending time with the other interns that were my age, and the work I was doing at the Family Courthouse. I learned a lot about various social issues, the legal system, and the city of Syracuse itself. I also created close bonds with some of our clients, which was very special to me. I am so grateful for such an informative and eye opening experience!

Advice

Be prepared to be challenged and have your worldview expanded. Meaning come in with an open and empathetic mind. But you will love it!

Advocacy Intern

June - August 2023 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I found all of the other interns and staff to be very kind and understanding during my time at Vera House. I appreciated them being patient and allowing the interns to shadow supportive services (i.e., support line, callouts, etc.)

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more hands-on time during the training to learn all of the skills needed to thrive at Vera House. I would have preferred some more in-person time during Orientation & Training, so I could have connected with the staff from the get-go.

Advice

I would recommend listening to all that the staff has to share at Vera House. They provided interns with a lot of knowledge and skills that will not only be beneficial in your role as intern, but rather life skills that you will be able to take with you to future endeavors.

Advocacy Intern

May 2023 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I have really loved and valued this internship. I had unfettered access to mentorship, growth, and the ability to seek new experiences at any point during the internship. I was able to work in several different avenues of advocacy, received clear and direct feedback on my performance, and never felt confused about the expectations or responsibilities of the role.

Advice

Ask questions! It's normal for things to come up, especially working in crisis environments, and asking questions is the best way to learn!
