Information Technology

January 2014 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

There was a lot of room for growth, both professionally and personally. My co-workers and supervisors were very helpful in providing whatever resources and direction was required to complete very meaningful tasks. Everything I did had an immediate impact on the business as a whole and I felt like I was a real part of the team.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more interaction between co-ops or having someone there who kind of was the glue for the co-ops. We were kind of separate due to organization, although we were all physically located close to each other.

Advice

Use the opportunity to learn new skills and grow. Also, take the opportunity to learn to stay focused on your job. Don't be distracted by the internet and if there is nothing to do, which happens from time to time, you can go to your supervisors or even others to see if there is anything you can learn or do. I originally thought IT work was going to be pretty boring and a lot of desktop support, but it is way more than that. IT departments are critical to the success of companies and my initial worries of doing meaningless tasks was unfounded.

Category Management Intern

June - August 2015 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

From the second I interviewed with my boss from Valvoline, I knew I was going to be working for a great company and accompanied by even better people. Having never been to Lexington, or Kentucky in general, prior to moving there for the summer, I cannot give enough praise to the southern hospitality and genuine care that everyone there provided for me during my 10 week stay. The internship was challenging, fulfilling, and exciting. I got to do something new every day and challenge myself to work on projects that were beyond school-level.

What I wish was different

I was their first intern in several years, so they didn't have a set program set up for me for each week, which would've been easier to follow. That being said, they found things for me to do every week if I had nothing to do for that given day/time. Since they've had me as an intern, however, I think they've developed a more structured 10-week program.

Advice

Embrace the experience of being in a new place. Lexington was absolutely breathtaking with so many historical areas to visit. The food is fantastic and the people are even better. After your 10 weeks, you are guaranteed to want to come back to visit.
