Valcor Engineering

Program Management intern

January - May 2023 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

I like the company culture, they would often host fun events for the employees. Flexible schedule in regards to projects. Many chances to learn.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more Intern-only events. I also think that onboarding should include explanations of the entire valve production process and an explanation of the common Acronyms.

Advice

Talk to other roles in the company and learn how the production process fits together.

Every single person at Valcor is extremely friendly and always willing to help. Managers are well organized and give interns meaningful and exciting work—a friendly work environment with outstanding HR.

What I wish was different

Advice

Talking to people and getting friendly with all the faces at Valcor is such a great way to learn so much about the engineering process. I worked with people from almost every department at Valcor and I have such a better understanding of what it takes and what people go through to make a part come to reality.

Test Engineering

May - August 2023 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

I worked on a lot of projects where I was designing various test systems. I appreciated that I got the opportunity to work on many projects which is great to put on a resume. I also liked that the managers were considerate in assigning people to projects that aligned with their interests and their areas of study.

What I wish was different

I was a part of the Test Engineering team. I wish I got more of an opportunity to see/learn what the other groups did so I could explore more what I want to do in the future. That is more of my fault though for not asking more questions.

Advice

You have to go out and ask people questions to learn about areas you are curious in.

Working at Valcor was a really great experience. I really learned a lot as I got to work hands on and work closely with the Op Ex team. I really feel that this internship strengthened my skills, making me a better engineer.

Design Engineer Intern

January - May 2023 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed the work environment and fellow coworkers. Also, I enjoyed the fast-paced learning and the many opportunities to test my skills.

What I wish was different

I wish we had some more introductory courses into the valves and the Valcor specific websites like PDM and Epicor. I also wish we had at least one intern only group meeting, where we could meet each other and talk about what we've learned.

Advice

I would just say to keep an open mind - look to learn something in every task you are doing. Every role in the company is crucial and the more you know about each aspect, the easier the design process will flow.

Purchasing Intern

June - August 2022 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

What I liked the most about interning at Valcor was how involved in the day to day operations I was straight from the start of my internship. Being able to have such a significant hands on experience taught me many new technical skills related to my field of study as well as great interpersonal skills. Additionally there are multiple events for the staff every month from onsite BBQs to ice cream trucks and from food trucks to a breakfast in the cafe!

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is to ask away when it comes to questions. All departments of staff are extremely friendly and go out out their way to thoroughly explain any processes or procedures you are unsure about.

Aerospace Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

There was a lot of opportunity to learn different aspects of the company. You could talk to people in every department and get a good idea of the way things work which I found really interesting. I worked in the design department and worked a lot with initial designs, updating designs, documentation, and development testing. It was a really valuable experience and really showed me what's involved in a high level engineering department.

What I wish was different

The only issue I had was I wish I had a more defined role. I found myself looking for work a lot of the time instead of having a steady flow. There were many times that there was not much going on that I could help with and had periods of just shadowing other people.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice is to go in willing to learn. I was often asked to assist in things that were new to me and really challenged me to think in new ways. There were many times I had to do my own research on the job to improve my understanding. Though the people you work with in design are incredibly helpful and are always willing to answer questions and help you understand what you are working on.

Design Engineering Intern

June - September 2022 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

The employees were all really nice and helpful. I felt as though I made many friends, both professionally and personally. The work was very challenging but great technical experience. I also enjoyed the company events such as the manager's BBQ and ice cream trucks.

What I wish was different

More of a formal on-boarding/training process. When I first came to the company I had no idea what solenoid valves were, nor how they worked. I had to consult with the current staff in order to find resources explaining the company processes.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Springfield, NJ

What I liked

Working hands on and building products gave me a different perspective on the engineering design process. It's critical for design engineers to implement how their models will be put together in production in their designs. The amount of time that is spent on how a model is to be put together will certainly effect the production time of that product. I also enjoyed being a part if a friendly and helping culture, meeting new friends and having a BBQ or Ice cream truck pass by every once in a while!

What I wish was different

Advice

Stay calm when you make mistakes and don't hesitate to ask questions or for help. Everyone is very helpful and understanding as we are all part of the same team.

What I wish was different

One piece of advice that I would share is to ask questions about everything. You don't know what you don't know, therefore it is imperative to fire away with any and all question one may have. Aircraft Systems and Aerospace Design Engineer

June - August 2021 • Springfield Township, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the fast pace and hands-on nature of the projects at Valcor. I enjoyed seeing designs I have made, whether it be for a small test fixture or a component of a valve, and testing that design. Additionally, I found it very rewarding seeing a project make its way from the concept phase to the prototype testing phase where I was able to test the design and find ways of improving the design for successful operation. The other engineers were very helpful for any questions I had regarding design concepts or operation of testing equipment. Due to Valcor's small size, I was able to meet many of the engineers and technicians. All in all, a wonderful place to work and gave me a wealth of knowledge and intuition that has given me confidence in myself as an engineer.

What I wish was different

I wish there was an internal tracking system for test fixture kits. I would often have difficulty finding equipment for test setups, leading to minor delays in the project.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions whenever you are confused about a concept or how something is done. The general attitude at Valcor is that we are all working together to ensure the success of the project and our peers. Each project is a learning opportunity. If hands-on work is not what you are looking for, Valcor has countless positions that do not involve hands-on work.
