UTC Aerospace Systems

Planning Co-Op

March 2019 • Windsor Locks, CT

What I liked

I like the flexibility of this employer. My employer understands that I go to school and work 40 hrs/week, so they are flexible with working remotely and making up hours

Project Engineering Co-op

February - July 2018 • Windsor Locks, CT

What I liked

I really enjoyed the wealth of knowledge that I gained from doing this co-op. Everyone that I met was very helpful and open to assisting me when I was in need. The projects they had me working on were real projects and I was treated like a full-time engineer. I enjoyed communicating and interacting with various engineering disciplines and with suppliers. In addition, the resources UTC Aerospace Systems has for their employees outside of work is tremendous.

What I wish was different

There were times when I felt like tasks and responsibilities were not communicated well to me. As mentioned above, being treated like a full-time engineer is great but at the same time it can be stressful especially when you do not have the knowledge of a full-time engineer. With that being said, I really enjoyed my time at UTC Aerospace Systems.

Advice

Ask questions and be open to learn. No matter where you go, there will be a steep learning curve and you will be drinking from a fire hose. Do not stress out. Just ask questions when you are unsure of anything because they are there to help you learn and gain experience.

Software Engineer Intern

July 2018 • Westford, MA

What I liked

Great group of co-workers and managers. People were always willing to help with anything you needed. Nice location. Good and reasonably priced on-site food options.

What I wish was different

Advice

Always speak up if you need direction or assistance, don't wait for people to come to you - they do not micro-manage.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

January - August 2018 • Rockford, IL

What I liked

I liked a lot of things about this company. It was great experience in a growing industry that made it very fun to come to work every day. My co-workers were incredible to be around and on top of that, the pay was phenomenal.

What I wish was different

I wish they have would included more intern events for the interns to all meet each other. A lot of it was off work hours, which was great, but a lunch during work hours every other week would have been beneficial.

Advice

Take initiative! There is always work to be done, so get involved and be apart of a lot of different projects. You'll lean so much more.

What I wish was different

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • Vergennes, VT

What I liked

The intern events planned throughout the summer were exceptional.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more interaction between other departments in the facility in VT as an intern to get a feel for the other jobs available there.

Advice

Altogether it was amazing. The experience taught me a ton and I'm happy to be a full time employee of UTC Aerospace Systems after accepting their return offer.

Engineering Co-op

May - August 2018 • Windsor Locks, CT

What I liked

I had the opportunity to create my own research project and call my own shots. I always had support if I needed it, but I was given lots of room to play around on my own.

What I wish was different

I wish the program had been more structured. There was no assistance in finding housing (they gave a stipend but no suggestions on where to find short term housing). It also would have been nice to have networking events with all of the co-ops together.

Advice

If there's something you're interested in getting exposure to but aren't-just ask! Everyone is so helpful and wants you to have the most valuable experience possible, which means getting to know all the different projects that are going on around the company.

Electrical Engineering Co-op

June - December 2018 • Westford, MA

What I liked

I like always having work to do. There is always something to work on, and it is work that feels on-par with what a full-time engineer would do. I've been given many opportunities to learn new skills. I also enjoy working in a larger facility with chances to work on different teams performing a variety of tasks.

What I wish was different

Everyone here is very busy, so getting help is sometimes difficult, especially when working on a small team with a limited number of people who understand the project. Additionally, the plant has many young employees, but there was almost no effort to integrate them into a group. It would have been nice to have some chances to make new friends in a new area.

Advice

I would advise a potential employee to be prepared to work, and also to be patient. Sometimes there will be technological issues or a shortage of people to help you, so you have to accept this and try to come up with other solutions.

Systems Engineering

June - August 2018 • Rockford, IL

What I liked

Did a lot of interesting testing in which the results will actually be used to help develop an upcoming aircraft - was not given a "intern" task.

What I wish was different

A mentorship structure would have been nice. Company morale is a bit low.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask your manager if you are given tasks that aren't helping you improve yourself!

What I liked

Casual atmosphere and lots of different things to do and hands on tasks, not just sitting at a desk all day. Friendly coworkers and Hood River atmosphere was nice in the summer. Beautiful area

What I wish was different

More organized plan for what tasks to assign the interns.

Advice

Come in with an open mind and be ready to do anything

What I liked

Everyone is very friendly, very helpful and eager to solve problems. Management was very helpful as well. My boss has been my Monroe who has challenged and pushed me to be the best I can be.

What I wish was different

The process of getting an offer after an internship is slow.

Advice

Be open and eager to learn.

Quality Engineer

May - August 2018 • San Marcos, TX

What I liked

They gave me a lot of responsibility and meaningful projects.

What I wish was different

It was a very small plant and I was the only intern so it was not the most social experience.

Advice

Always talk to your boss if there is something you're interested in. Mine was able to put me on projects that I wanted to get experience in.
