Utah Conservation Corps

Crew Leader

June - August 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

I loved getting to work and camp outside all summer! I also loved getting to learn and practice multiple conservation techniques. I learned how to build/repair trails, operate a chainsaw, mix and apply herbicide, safely operate a woodchipper, and construct fences.

What I wish was different

Management. Sometimes the projects were very unorganized due to miscommunication or poor planning.

Advice

Be able to think critically and problem solve (things don't always go as planned). Stay positive and work well with others.

What I liked

I loved working outdoors and working with really cool people! I worked on a number of conservation projects such as fuels reduction, trail building, and river restoration.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have lasted longer but I had to go back to school.

Advice

It’s hard work and requires some knowledge of the outdoors. It is important to take care of yourself or it can become uncomfortable quickly.

What I liked

It was an amazing and challenging experience! I got to start off with a few weeks working with the disaster response team. We went to Iowa and helped flood survivors. The disaster team is usually separate from the typical conservation work. But it is something UCC offers and I highly recommend doing it! During the actual season I work on a chainsaw crew with the forest service and had a few other small projects planting willow, helping in the nursery at Zion national park, and doing invasive weed removal at Grand-Staircase Escalante National Park.

What I wish was different

The whole experience was really positive for me. I wouldn’t change anything because it taught me so many things about the work we were doing and my self.

Advice

This job is challenging and physically demanding. You have to love being outside. The jobs ranged from 4-9 days on and 3-5 days off, depending on the project. The days you work you are camping in a tent. Even if you don’t have camping/outdoor experience it is ok! The people you work with are really friendly and will help you out with any concerns you may have. Plus, I never camped in a tent before UCC and that is the only way I want to camp now :)
