Lab technician, research assistant

May - August 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

I was able to work at labs on Utah State Logan campus with the Fish Ecology Lab, Bug Lab, and plant lab. The labs offer great opportunities for learning and also provide flexible hours. I also went with a graduate student that I met at a lab to the RioGrande in New Mexico to help with research opportunities. I also went with another research student to Montana and BC to help with research.

What I wish was different

I wish I could of had more time during summer!

Advice

Network with people around you. I got offered the positions from the graduate students from knowing and talking to them.

Laboratory technician

April 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

The job was rewarding and the other staff were friendly and helpful. The hours were flexible, and I never felt like I wasn't being scheduled enough to fit my needs. One of my favorite work experiences

What I wish was different

The pay was a little low for someone who already has a degrees. All the money is paid from grants, so I can understand that there are reasons that there isn't as much available to pay techs. The sciences are underfunded, and that's no fault of the employers.

Advice

It's not hard to enjoy the job! Just as with every job, it's important to bring a positive attitude. As long as you are doing your part, then it's actually a lot of fun!

Field research assistant

June - September 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

I got paid to travel and camp all over Utah for an entire summer.

What I wish was different

I ended up with a partner that I didn't really get along with, which can be difficult when you're spending up to a full week with just that one person in isolation.

Advice

I would just heavily advise towards taking any opportunity like this if it becomes available. This was great for me this summer.
