USG

project engineer

January - August 2023 • Port Reading, NJ

What I liked

This job was much more than introductory project management. I gained exposure to a manufacturing environment and got to contribute in meaningful ways. I got to be involved with small continuous improvement projects, large infrastructure projects, and primary planning of process-related projects. I was given the chance to lead problem definition/project scope goals. I learned about the importance of safety in manufacturing, and got to contribute ideas and ultimately plan their execution!

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more defined time goals for my larger projects. It's difficult because much time is spent waiting on contractors/bidding/quotes, but my larger projects ended up getting stretched months past the ideal end.

Advice

This role requires self-motivation. You need to decide to go on the production floor to learn about the process, the operator jobs, the conditions, the equipment. You need to set deadlines for your work and keep track of miscellaneous tasks assigned casually. Most importantly, you need to actively seek assistance when needed and ask questions constantly.
