At USGBC I had the opportunity to take on a substantive project. I spent the summer doing state policy research, with the ultimate goal of creating a guide to help state officials implement green building incentives, legislation, etc. It was amazing to be trusted and tasked with a productive project, instead of being used for daily, menial tasks.
What I wish was different
It was wonderful to work with the Advocacy and Policy team. USGBC consists of many other great departments, such as the Education and LEED teams. I would have gained a lot from the opportunity of working more closely with staff and interns from other departments.
Advice
Be ready to work! Take advantage of all of the wonderful professionals sitting nearby and throughout the office. Also, reach out to the other interns in the cohort. A lot of great people to know and connections to make.

What I liked
I loved that I was able to take ownership of tangible projects. I felt like my Environmental Studies major had prepared me well for the position and it was great to experience work at an internationally-known non-profit.
