This summer I had the pleasure to partake in the VALOR (Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency) program summer externship at the Durham VA Medical Center.
The VALOR program provided me an opportunity to work with an assigned preceptor during the summer to learn the roles of a registered nurse. The program prepared me for a career at the VA Medical Center working with Veterans. The program provided special experiences such as working in the intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization lab, shadowing with a nurse practitioner, and developing as well as presenting a project to nursing leadership. This externship enhanced my clinical skills, expanded my knowledge base, and most importantly elevated my confidence.
